Jack Ross addresses Will Grigg’s shocking miss as Sunderland draw with Blackpool

Sunderland manager Jack Ross has had his say on striker’s Will Grigg’s two wasted chances in Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Blackpool at the Stadium of Light.

Will Grigg joined Sunderland on transfer deadline day from Wigan for a fee that could rise up to £4 million and made his home debut for the club on Tuesday night. However, it didn’t go as planned for the Northern Ireland international.

Grigg missed a great chance to put the Black Cats ahead with the scores at 0-0, but he was denied by Blackpool shot sopper Mark Howard. He had a much better chance to score in the second half, as he rounded the ‘keeper, but could only find the side netting with the goal wide open.

His missed chances may have cost Sunderland the chance to win the game, but manager Jack Ross is confident that he will bounce back from his misses, stating that he would score that goal 99 times out of 100.

“The two clear-cut opportunities he had, the first just prior to their goal and then the one in the second half, I think he would back himself 99 times out of 100 to take – particularly the second one,” Ross told The Chronicle.

“But the great thing for me is that he is getting in those positions and if we can keep getting him in those positions and creating opportunities, he will score goals because his track record suggests nothing else.”

Grigg has been prolific in his time in League One throughout his career, playing with both MK Dons and Wigan. In 261 League One games, Grigg has scored 96 goals, according to Transfermarkt.
