Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich predictions

Before the first leg of this Champions League semi-final, the media in Spain dubbed this fixture the ‘European Clasico’.

It is hard to disagree with that moniker. Real Madrid are the most successful side in the history of this competition having lifted the trophy on 14 occasions.

AC Milan have won the tournament seven times to Bayern Munich’s six, but there have been many more meetings between the German giants and Madrid.

Last week’s tussle at the Allianz Arena was tight and there has been little to choose between the pair historically either. In 27 competitive clashes, Bayern have 11 wins and 41 goals while Madrid have 12 wins and 43 goals.

Los Blancos have been superior over the last decade or so, however, triumphing in six of the last eight matches (the other two were draws).

That means Bayern have not beaten Madrid in a competitive encounter for more than 12 years. Thomas Tuchel will be hoping to bring that barren run to an end on Wednesday.

His side conceded the first goal last time out, as Vinicius Junior slotted home after latching on to a Toni Kroos pass.

A Leroy Sane strike and a Harry Kane penalty gave Bayern a 2-1 lead in the second half, but Madrid restored parity via a spot-kick of their own, as Vinicius made no mistake from 12 yards in the 83rd minute.

The tie could not be more delicately poised. Both clubs are now able to dedicate their full attention to this competition: Bayern’s Bundesliga hopes ended weeks ago, while Madrid wrapped up the La Liga title with a 3-0 victory over Cadiz on Saturday.

The bookies’ odds show that the winner of this tie will be the favourite to lift the Champions League trophy at Wembley Stadium on June 1. The latest edition of the ‘European Clasico’ could be one of the best yet.

Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich betting tips

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich will butt heads for the second time in a week on Wednesday night.

Real Madrid to win - 19/20 (BetMGM)

Real Madrid are the most successful club and Carlo Ancelotti is the most successful manager in the history of the competition.

There is no chance that the Italian will panic on Wednesday. He has seen everything in the game and is a master at remaining cool on the big occasion.

There will almost certainly be moments where Bayern cause Madrid problems. Yet the Spanish side have a remarkable ability to withstand pressure and stay in games. That is one reason to favour them here.

Another is their formidable home record. The enlarged Estadio Santiago Bernabeu has been a real fortress this term: Madrid have not lost in front of their own fans in any competition since April last year.

Tuchel’s squad contains plenty of quality, but the Bundesliga table shows why this is not among the best Bayern sides we have seen in recent times. Whereas Madrid have lost just one game in 90 minutes this season, Bayern have suffered no fewer than 10 defeats.

With home advantage behind them, Ancelotti’s team can complete the job this week.

Second half higher scoring - 21/20 (Spreadex)

Real Madrid’s 3-0 defeat of Cadiz at the weekend means they have won 15 of their 17 home La Liga games this season.

But within those matches, they tend to fare much better after the break than before it.

Madrid have scored 13 goals at the Bernabeu from minutes one to 45, compared to a whopping 30 from minutes 46 to 90.

We could be in store for a relatively cagey opening period, but this match will surely open up at some point.

There were three goals in the second half last week after a first half containing one goal. We could see something similar.

Vinicius Junior to score any time - 13/8 (bet365)

In the first couple of years of his Real Madrid career, Vinicius Junior was as frustrating as he was electrifying.

Yet there is no doubt any longer that the Brazil international is among the best players in the world. Three more goals would make this the most productive season of Vinicius’ career to date - and we like his chances of getting at least one of them on Wednesday.

Vinicius scored twice in the first leg, once from open play and once with a penalty. The fact he takes spot-kicks for Madrid is a bonus, but he should get plenty of chances from open play too.

Bayern Munich’s backline has been a weak point all season long. They have kept just three clean sheets in their last 19 matches.

That does not bode well for a trip to the Bernabeu, where Vinicius and co. will be waiting to exploit any gaps that appear.
